The moment has arrived! The 10th edition of the University of the Western Cape's (UWC) electrifying sports magazine, Blue and Gold, is here, and boy, oh boy, does it pack a punch!
The timing couldn't be more perfect, as UWC is currently basking in the glow of some incredible sporting achievements. The big one is the rugby team's return to the Varsity Cup – South Africa's premier university rugby competition – after brushing aside every team on their way to top this year's Varsity Shield competition. The team brought home the trophy for a record third time.
UWC's rugby programme is a breeding ground for superstars, with three former UWC players signing their first professional contracts (see page 24), two players representing the national team at the Under 20 level (see page 27), and alumna Shaunique Hess making her debut in the Springbok women’s team in March (see page 20).
While rugby has been on an incredible ascent, other sports codes on our campus are thriving as well. The university's football club has also regained their status to compete in the prestigious Varsity Men’s Football Cup, marking their long-awaited return after a four-year hiatus. Until 2018, our team participated in the tournament every year, and in 2015, they emerged as victorious champions!
Turning our attention to the international stage, women's sports is having a whirlwind year. With netball, cricket, and football all hosting world cups, bringing exhilarating matches to fans worldwide. Cape Town experienced a sensational cricket tournament earlier this year, and mark your calendars for an even more awe-inspiring event in July – the netball world cup promises to dazzle spectators in the Mother City!
The excitement doesn't stop there! The senior national women's team, Banyana Banyana, is preparing to embark on an unforgettable journey to the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this July. Keep an eye out for several current and former UWC players proudly representing our institution on the world stage.
