UWC claim big FNB Varsity Cup win over Madibaz
The University of the Western Cape rugby team, aka FNB UWC, claimed their first win of the season in the FNB Varsity Cup when they thrashed FNB Madibaz 60-26 in a “morale-boosting” victory at UWC Sports Stadium last night.

Peter Williams, whose sterling performance earned him a much-deserved FNB Player That Rocks award, set the tone for the home side when a multi-phase attack finished with the winger diving under the posts for a point-of-origin try.

Marshaleno Valensky, Reece Bocks, Godfrey Muzanarwo, Tasriq Mynhardt, Aydon Topley and Will Vraagom added a try each, and captain Lyle Hendricks made all seven conversions in a one-sided encounter UWC dominated from start to finish.

The win lifted Udubs from the basement of the log standings to eighth in the 10-team competition after three rounds of matches played. It also puts the team on track to maintain its Varsity Cup status.

Hendricks commented that the victory could not come at a better time: “Coming from the last two weeks, the win last night just gave the guys the boost and motivation for next week and for the rest of the campaign going forward. I think that is the rugby we can play and we showcased last night”.

What has the team done differently to their opening two losses against FNB UFS Shimlas and FNB NWU Eagles?

“We played as a team last night, we just gelled together as the backs, and the forwards and collectively came out as a team.  I think our discipline was much better than in the last two weeks. Those are the small things that we needed to fix that made a massive impact.”

Hendricks said the team would try to keep the winning momentum. “Next week, we play UCT, which we always do well against and hopefully we can just keep that momentum. The players have been playing so well as a collective and not as individuals. I’m happy for the boys, but there is room for improvement. We can just take it one step at a time.”
