UWC ladies soccer - champions again

UWC Ladies Football Club have been crowned as the new champions of the Coca-Cola Cup after they beat RV United 2-1 in a hotly contested final at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, 8 October 2016.

Goals by Abongile Dlani and Amogelang Motau in respective halves of the game were enough to wrestle the ladies category of the Safa Cape Town-organised amateur Coca-Cola Cup from last year’s winners, RV United.

The Under-18 final was won by Glendene United who beat Masidlale Academy, while the men’s senior’s trophy went to Young Pirates after they overcame Two For Joy.

It was the second trophy for Udubs ladies in one week, and the third for the year so far - they won the Northern Suburbs Local Football Association’s District Knockout final last weekend and the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Club Championships early in the year.

UWC coach Nathan Peskin was over the moon with the victory and commented that the win had lifted the mood in the team.

“We wanted to bounce back from the Varsity Football final loss [UWC narrowly lost 0-1 to Tshwane University of Technology in September] and the Coke final gave us the opportunity to do just that,” he said.

Peskin revealed that it was a mission for his side to win the Coke Cup as circumstances on campus were not ideal for their preparations during the week the University was shut down due to protest.

“It was not our best performance and RV United played better football on the day. But our girls were hyped up, focused, had strong character - and we had enough talent to bring the cup home in the end.”

From the beginning of the year the team had aimed at bringing home at least three of the five trophies they were competing in i.e. the Safa Sasol League, Varsity Football, USSA Club Championships, Coke Cup and the Sasol National play-offs (subject to winning the Sasol league) and the District Knockout was a bonus. “Our development team exceeded expectations in their first season in the LFA by ending league runners up and winning the Knockout finals” Peskin added.
