A large contingent of UWC Sport stars will set off for various USSA winter events in the coming weeks.
Recently, representatives of each gathered at UWC Stadium for a farewell event where Professor Pamela Dube, DVC: Student Development and Support wished them well.
The first student-athletes to pit themselves against their university rivals will be the Dance Sport team (both men and women), who will have the benefit of familiarity as UWC plays host to the USSA Dance Sport Championships from 29 June - 3 July.
As that event concludes, so the majority of the other championships get underway - all from 4-8 July. They are:
USSA Netball at University of Pretoria
USSA Volleyball at University of Cape Town
USSA Hockey hosted in Cape Town
USSA Rugby 15s at University of Pretoria
UWC will look to maintain their top eight status, and Varsity Netball place for 2023, at the netball championships. Similarly, after a disappointing 2022 Varsity Cup campaign, the rugby boys will hope to put up a strong showing, as will the volleyballers. Meanwhile, 'growth' may well be the name of the game for the hockey players, especially at facilities they know well.
UWC's winter programme will conclude with it's leading karateka competing at the USSA Karate trials on 9 July. The competition, to be held at Eesterust Civic Centre Main Hall, is in preparation for the upcoming FISU Combat Sports Championship.
