The weather may have been gloomy, with intermittent rain showers threatening to dampen spirits, but nothing could deter athletes and spectators who turned up in droves for the Fast & Flat race at the University of Western Cape (UWC). The race was put on hold for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Development and Support, Prof Matete Madiba, fired the shot that kicked off the race, and Harold Berman provided vibrant commentary.
Tanya Scott was the first woman to cross the finish line, and UWC alumnus Nadeel Wildschutt showcased exceptional athletic prowess to win the men’s race. In a gracious gesture, he shared his achievements with the cheering crowd, crediting his hometown, Ceres, for inspiring his love for running.
“Today was an incredible opportunity to run in terrible conditions at UWC, but it is all about the effort. I am very glad that I could partake in this race and be part of the greater running community. There’s lots still laying ahead through the season. We are looking at competing at the ASA 5km road race in a couple of weeks, and later on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in Johannesburg,” said Wildschutt.
As the race drew to a close, event director Glen Bentley managed a prize-giving ceremony for adults and children who participated.
The successful return of the Fast & Flat race at the University of Western Cape surpassed all expectations. The runners' unwavering dedication, the University's support and the spectators' vibrant energy created an unforgettable event.
