UWC's Molatelo Kobo and Amogelang Motau are among the three nominees for this year’s Varsity Women’s Football Player of the Tournament award.
They will both appear in Monday's final at Tuks Stadium, against Tuks whose striker Wendy Shongwe is the other nominee.
Kobo (pictured left), a goal-scoring winger, and Motau who plays in central midfield have been key to UWC reaching their fifth Varsity Women’s Football final in the past six tournaments and will be hoping they can carry them to their first title.
The pair have been rewarded for their consistency, not least in the group stage of the tournament when UWC got the better of the universities of Johannesburg (3-1), North-West (1-0) and Limpopo (5-0). Following those matches, the Varsity Women’s Football head coaches each selected three nominees for the award. The coaches ranked their nominees from first to third place, with first position worth three points, second position two points and third position one point.
The player who received the most points from the coaches’ votes will be presented with the award after the final which UWC reached by beating Wits University in their semifinal, 4-0.
Kobo scored UWC's first of this year's tournament, during the 3-1 come-from-behind win against UJ and netted again against UL (4-0) which sealed UWC's semifinal place. She may not have scored against Wits in that semi- but her traits were in full show, not least her workrate up-and-down the right flank and ability to find teammates with defence-splitting passes or terrorising her opposite number with overlapping runs.
Motau (pictured right), meanwhile, does her hard yards in the middle of the park. Her's is to dictate the tempo of UDubs' play by bringing the ball out from the defence before picking the right pass to the team's lethal forward line. This year's tournament, not only marks Motau's return to action after a lengthy layoff but also her first Varsity Women's Football since 2016 - the year after she previously claimed the Player of the Tournament title. If anything tipped the coaches' votes in favour again it might be the two spectacular goals she scored against UL in Round 3 and then against Wits which sparked wild celebrations between the players on the field and the rest of the UWC crew on the touchline.
They will hope to have two reasons to celebrate wildly again after the Final on Monday evening.
