ACU Synthesis-January 2018
New year, new opportunities; we are all passionate advocates for the transformative power of higher education and over the coming months, the ACU and its members will be able to engage and influence education ministers from across the globe.
The 20th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) takes place in Fiji next month and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will open in London in April. The ACU is representing its members and raising key issues at these two major events.
At CCEM we are bringing a delegation of vice-chancellors from across the Commonwealth, leading discussions at the Integrated Partners' Forum, and organising a special session with ministers from the Commonwealth's small states on universities, climate change and resilience. At CHOGM we will continue the dialogue from CCEM, with themes on mobility and gender equity, respect and understanding, and looking at how universities and businesses can engage more deeply to create real opportunities for the next generation, while also ensuring our students develop the necessary skills for the future.
Last month we brought together 30 brilliant student leaders – representing member universities in 20 countries – to Malaysia to develop their skills and cultivate innovative solutions to promote respect and understanding. Students came away from this inspiring event having expanded their cultural awareness, and with action plans to implement at their home institutions. Read students’ accounts from New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh and Uganda here, and from Canada here.
I’ll leave you with my warmest wishes for 2018. Please do make sure to share the scholarship opportunities highlighted below with your students. These opportunities are key for the success of a vibrant, tolerant, and prosperous higher education sector.
