About CEI at UWC

The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) was established at the University of the Western Cape in 2013 to develop and grow entrepreneurial thinking and acting within all disciplines on campus.

The CEI purpose is to provide a holistic and integrated entrepreneurial development support for both students and the broader community of SMME’s in the Western Cape, designed to create future entrepreneurial leaders and a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.

About STEP in South Africa

STEP aims at providing university students and unemployed graduates with theoretical and practical skills to become an entrepreneur. STEP, originally developed by Leuphana University and Makerere University in Uganda, has been proven to create a positive mind-set towards self-employment and will create opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and values to overcome the challenge of youth
unemployment.

Since 2012, the German Commission for UNESCO, BASF Stiftung and Leuphana University have been implementing the STEP programme worldwide. Following Uganda, Kenya and Mexico, in 2018, the training started in South Africa for the first time at the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda in 2019.

In 2022, UWC launches Student Entrepreneurship Training Programme (STEP) in partnership with Leuphana University of Lüneburg, the South African National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and BASF Stiftung.
