
Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Law (Labour Dispute Resolution Practice)
The University of the Western Cape, in partnership with the CCMA and the labour relations practice industry, offers a Post - Graduate Diploma in labour dispute resolution practice, an accredited qualification. It is aimed at working professionals in the labour law field to equip them with the knowledge and capacities required to act as dispute resolution practitioners, including arbitrators, mediators and conciliators. It will also be invaluable to trade union and employers’ representatives in enabling them to participate more effectively in labour dispute resolution processes.The qualification serves as a benchmark for arbitrators and mediators.
As a holistic occupationally directed programme, it produces graduates ready to practice after undergoing the basic practical exposure considered necessary by the industry, underpinned by the theoretical requirements of the higher education academic system.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must be in possession of a relevant degree with 60% average over the last two years of study. Consideration will be given in recognition of prior learning based on relevant work experience. Please note that this is the minimum requirement and does not guarantee admission.Programme Content
MODULE 1LABOUR LAW IN CONTEXT
This module deals with the historical and legal framework of labour law.
MODULE 2
THE RIGHT TO FAIR LABOUR PRACTICES
The module focuses on the law of unfair dismissal and unfair labour practices.
MODULE 3
LABOUR DISPUTE RESOLUTION
The module deals with the theory and content of statutory and informal processes of labour dispute resolution.
MODULE 4
ADVANCED DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCEDURE
The module focuses on the practical side of conciliation,
mediation and arbitration with hands-on facilitation offered
by experienced practitioners.
Dates & Duration
1-year part-time programme, maximum of 2-years in which to complete. Lectures are multi-modal and take place on Saturdays.Method of evaluation
