Appointment of Prof Jacques de Ville as Dean of Law

(Published - 2 August 2018)

Dear Campus Community,

It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Prof Jacques de Ville as Dean of the Faculty of Law, effective from 1 August 2018.

As you will know, Prof de Ville has been acting dean since January 2018 after the retirement of his predecessor, Prof Bernard Martin.

Prof de Ville brings a wealth of experience to this portfolio, having been an academic at the University of the Western Cape since 1993 when he was appointed to the Department of Public Law. Since then, he has explored different fields of law as a scholar, allowing him the opportunity to publish four monographs, edit two books, translate one book and contribute to numerous journals and books.

His fields of research over the past 25 years include legal interpretation, administrative law, jurisprudence and constitutional theory. The French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, has been a key research interest for Prof de Ville and has resulted in the publication of “Jacques Derrida: Law as Absolute Hospitality”, which earned him the 2012 Vice-Chancellor’s book award. He currently holds a B3 rating from the National Research Foundation.

In addition, Prof de Ville has been a senior professor since 2007, has taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and has supervised postgraduate students.

Prof de Ville has gained extensive leadership skills through various management positions he has held in the Faculty of Law, having previously been the Chairperson of the Department of Public Law and Jurisprudence and the co-director of the Research Unit for Legal and Constitutional Interpretation.

During his tenure as Acting Dean, Prof de Ville, with the support of my office, successfully led the Faculty’s efforts to have the LLB programme fully accredited with the Council on Higher Education. This process afforded Prof de Ville extensive engagement with the faculty, resulting in the drafting of its new strategic plan that will guide the future growth and direction of the Faculty of Law.

About his ambitions for the Faculty, Prof de Ville said: “I hope to play a role in establishing the Law Faculty as one of the most prestigious on the African continent. The Faculty will, under my leadership, strive for excellence in respect of research, teaching and supervision. I will furthermore support and encourage the growth of the Faculty’s niche areas of excellence as well as the admission of greater numbers of well-performing postgraduate students to programmes within these niche areas.”

I am confident that Prof de Ville will bring engaged, thoughtful and fair leadership as Dean of the Faculty of Law, and I am sure that the UWC campus community will support him in this vital role. Please join me in congratulating Prof de Ville on his appointment.

Yours sincerely,

Prof Vivienne Lawack
