Please read the eligibility requirements carefully before applying.

The Postdoctoral Fellows will be required to register at the University of the Western Cape, and will contribute to the research areas of the DSI/NRF SARChI Chairs which have complementary research programmes, and which seek to consolidate a world-class hub in the global south in the field of health policy and systems research.

  • career development in health systems research, with a specific emphasis on developing a pipeline of South African scholars;
  • building this field with partners in South Africa, and internationally;

The Chair is seeking an applicant to contribute to building a gender and health systems portfolio at SOPH.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of a multidisciplinary project (led by Prof Asha George and Ms Nikki Schaay) that aims to create a collaborative community-based learning platform to support dialogue, exchange, capacity strengthening, and other forms of learning on gender transformative approaches in adolescent and young people’s sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) in South Africa.

In addition to the general requirements outlined towards the end of the Call, applicants for this post are also required to have the following specific skills/expertise:

  • experience working with multiple role players, including adolescents and young people, their families and communities, health service providers, and civil society organisations.

The Chair is advancing two major research agendas over the next few years:
1) Bottom-up health systems strengthening, with a focus on governance and leadership
2) Whole of society approaches, collaborative governance and placed-based intersectoral collaboration for health.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of an international collaborative project led by Prof Schneider and Prof Hanani Tabana, exploring drivers and scalable community solutions of immunisation access and uptake.  The Fellow will be required to engage in a program evaluation through the application of complex systems thinking.

In addition to the general requirements outlined towards the end of the Call, applicants for this post are also required to have:
  • Experience (both theoretical and practical) of program and process evaluation using various models and “thinking” such as programme theory, theory of change, experience of evaluating programmes incorporating human-centred design processes.
  • Familiarity with complex systems thinking and analysis
  • Familiarity with, and have applied, some frameworks used in Public Health (for example: the RE-AIM framework) for evaluating program impact
  • Demonstrated evidence of qualitative and quantitative research methods i.e. collecting, synthesising and analysing quantitative data (including primary data collection and extracting data from secondary sources such as DHIS, Census data etc.) and collecting and analysing qualitative data.
Applicants must demonstrate evidence of the above through reports or publications of relevant previous work.

The Postdoctoral Fellows will contribute to both research and teaching activities linked to these areas.
