The Journal of Anti-Corruption Law (JACL), in collaboration with the Department of Criminal Justice and Procedure in the Faculty of Law at the University of the Western Cape, will host a hybrid conference entitled Combating Crime in the Public Sector on 25 October 2024.
Background:
Corruption is rampant in the public sector. Government institutions, with their access to vast amounts of money, create a fertile environment for corrupt activities. Government officials and their associates abuse their power and connections to commit various forms of economic crime. This includes malfeasance during the tender process, public procurement, and other methods of financial misappropriation. The Zondo Commission of Inquiry has unveiled the extent to which certain criminals have influenced decision-making at the highest levels of the state. Numerous allegations of underhanded governance have tainted some of the most senior members of the government. Various government institutions and state-owned enterprises have been financially crippled by corruption. Strategies, ideas, and concerns must be shared, debated, and reflected upon in an effort to curb this scourge of corruption. The Department of Criminal Justice and Procedure, in collaboration with the Journal of Anti-Corruption Law, therefore invites academics, students, lawyers, individuals, government officials, representatives of international and continental organizations, and non-governmental officials to attend and participate in a conference entitled "Combating Crime in the Public Sector." We especially call on those interested in presenting papers on the following broad range of topics related to economic crime. Note that themes may include but are not limited to:
- The impact of corruption on the realisation of civil and political rights
- Corruption affecting the public procurement processes
- Economic crimes, including money laundering
- State capture
- Corruption in state departments and state-owned enterprises
- The effect of corruption on vulnerable groups
ABSTRACTS
The organisers invite abstracts (of no more than 500 words) for papers to be presented at the conference. Abstracts must be submitted by 6 September 2024.
Abstracts must include the following information:
