Job Title: Project Field Researchers
Project Description
The Centre for Legal Integration in Africa (CLIA) is a research institute within the Faculty of Law, which was established in 2020 after its approval by the Council of the University of the Western Cape. With a stellar team of researchers and advisory board, CLIA is designed to be a confluence of interdisciplinary research on the interaction of legal orders in sub-Saharan Africa. It promotes interdisciplinary research, policy engagement and social outreach on normative orders to shift attention from conflict of laws to dialogue between state laws and indigenous African laws.CLIA is conducting research in selected municipalities in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces titled “Ascertaining the foundational values of indigenous laws in South Africa” with funding from the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF). The project aims to discover the core values that motivate people’s cultural practices in issues of marriage, land, inheritance, commerce, and traditional leadership. CLIA seeks to contract highly motivated and skilled field researchers with the following qualifications and competences:
Requirements:
- LLB or equivalent degree with research component
- Ability to organise and conduct research interviews
- Good interpersonal skills in multicultural environments
- Fluency in isiXhosa and one of Sepedi, Xitsonga and Tshivenda languages
- Excellent attention to detail and quick decision making
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people with varying gender, age, cultural and religious beliefs
- LLM or similar postgraduate degree with a research component
- Experience of conducting field research in cultural studies
Remuneration and responsibilities:
Remuneration is on a paid-on-claim basis totalling R6500 for three weeks of interviews.
- Administer research questionnaires in Limpopo or the Eastern Cape.
- Organise and conduct research interviews and focus group discussions.
- Participate in research planning and debriefing meetings.

Training workshop for field researchers in the Eastern Cape will be held on 25 October 2022 in East London, with fieldwork in the Eastern Cape occurring over three weeks in November 2022. Training and fieldwork for Limpopo will occur in 2023.
