As part of its focus on providing a rich First-Year Experience to its new students, the Faculty of Education arranged an excursion for 180 B.Ed Foundation Phase students on the weekend of 17 – 19 February 2023.
The excursion was hosted at Mizpah Centre, in the lovely Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve near Grabouw.
The programme was designed to provide students with more nuanced understandings of the complexity of the teaching profession. They engaged as Homo ludens (the playing human) in learning activities underpinned by a pedagogy of play. Problem-based and cooperative learning strategies were utilized, in order to enhance self-directed learning. Students reflected very positively on the excursion, and indicated that it confirmed that they made the right degree choice, and that they also experienced a sense of belonging as UWC and Education students.
