The Ivan Rugema Scholarship: Masters in Dispute Resolution

In 2003, Prof Rodney Uphoff from the University of Missouri (MU) collaborated with Dean Najma Moosa and Prof Pierre de Vos from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) to establish a winter school programme at UWC. The programme involved American and UWC law students. The first American students came to UWC in 2004 and successfully completed the winter school programme. This enabled MU to raise funds to create a scholarship in 2005. Ms Lisa Draga was the first UWC law graduate to complete a Masters in Dispute Resolution at MU in 2008. Thereafter, several other donors emerged especially Mr Fred White. His generosity allowed UWC to award several other UWC law graduates to complete a Masters in Dispute Resolution at MU.

Mr Ivan Rugema was one of the first students to travel to the U.S. on the scholarship that was funded by Mr White.  He returned to South Africa to become a lecturer in the law faculty at UWC. When Mr Rugema passed away in 2014, it was jointly agreed that UWC and MU would name the scholarship after him. The collaboration between UWC and MU continues today.
