Programme Information

The International Trade, Investment and Business Law specialisation focuses on world trade, business and investment law, with particular attention to Africa's interests within globalisation. The programme is collaborative in nature and was developed between the University of the Western Cape and the University of Pretoria.

It develops students' understanding of the legal and administrative structures of international markets while building critical thinking and practical capabilities relevant to global and African economic development.

International Trade

WTO regulation, free trade, agriculture, trade remedies, services, regionalism and trade negotiations.

International Investment

Foreign investment in Africa, investment agreements, public and private dimensions, financial institutions and investment regulation.

International Business

International sales, finance, trade finance, financial-market regulation and business transactions.

Dispute Settlement

Public and private dispute settlement, arbitration and mechanisms for international business transactions.

Africa and Regional Trade

African economic relations, regional and sub-regional organisations, implementation of international agreements and Africa's role in negotiations.

Trade, Society and Development

Environment, ethics, human rights, intellectual property, technology transfer and changing global economic institutions.

Important for 2027: The collaborating institutions rotate intakes. The 2027 intake will take place at the University of Pretoria from January to December 2027. Applications for the UP 2027 intake opened on 1 April 2026.

For the 2027 rotation, prospective students should follow the University of Pretoria application information. UP currently presents the collaborative programme as the LLM in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa (TILA), a programme presented by UP and UWC together with international partner universities.

The UP academic programme is a one-year, full-time programme. Its first semester includes intensive coursework in Advanced International Trade Law and Advanced International Investment Law, followed by a mini-dissertation in the second semester.
