The LLM in Mercantile Law brings together four sought-after areas of commercial and business law, preparing students for legal practice, corporate environments, regulatory institutions, further postgraduate study and multinational organisations.
Programme Information
The Department of Mercantile and Labour Law introduces students to the world of commercial and business law, with an emphasis on critical thinking and practical, transferable capabilities for legal practice and the corporate environment.
At postgraduate level, the LLM in Mercantile Law offers four areas of specialisation: Competition Law, Corporate Law, Tax Law, and International Trade, Investment and Business Law. Together, these fields address major developments in national, African and international business law.
Advanced study of competition law, regulation, policy, digital markets, public interest and cross-cutting areas of commercial law.
Corporate governance, finance, financial markets, mergers and acquisitions, insolvency, fundamental transactions and remedies.
Advanced domestic and international taxation and tax administration principles.
A collaborative UWC–UP field focused on international trade, investment and business law with a strong African perspective.
Mercantile Law provides an opportunity to pursue advanced study across important and evolving areas of commercial and business law. The programme combines a strong South African and African perspective with engagement in international legal and commercial developments.
Graduates develop specialised knowledge relevant to legal practice, corporate and regulatory environments, policy development, academia, multinational organisations and further research.
