
Dear Campus Community,
It is National Water Month in South Africa, and on 22 March, we marked World Water Day. As water levels in the Western Cape continue to decline to concerning levels, we at the University of the Western Cape have both an opportunity and a responsibility to lead—by conserving water on our campus and by empowering our communities to do the same. Water is the lifeblood of humanity, the driver of our economies, and the foundation upon which our natural world depends.
This year’s United Nations theme, "Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows," highlights a critical reality: the water crisis is not gender-neutral. Across Africa, where chronic drought and systemic inequality converge, women and girls bear a disproportionate burden as primary water collectors and those most vulnerable to scarcity. World Water Day serves as a global call to transform water management into a powerful driver of gender equity.
At the UWC, we meet this challenge with a strategic resolve rooted in social justice and scientific excellence. Water security is a non-negotiable pillar of our Institutional Operating Plan, reflecting our mission to address historical disparities through innovation. By championing "Water and Gender," UWC internalises the global mandate to ensure that scientific advancement directly serves the most marginalised. We believe that securing water is a precursor to health, food security, and shared prosperity, positioning the university as a pivotal bridge between academic research and the realisation of fundamental human rights.
This commitment is spearheaded by the Institute for Water Studies (IWS), supported by the UNESCO Chair on Geohydrology, Prof Yongxin Xu. UWC leads the frontier of water science by integrating Artificial Intelligence and Big Data to synthesise complex satellite observations with precision telemetry. We monitor groundwater and surface water at an unprecedented scale, from local catchments to continental basins. This allows our scientists to transform raw data into actionable intelligence, informing high-level governance and protecting at-risk livelihoods.
“Crucially, we advance gender equality through balanced student recruitment and North–South and South–South partnerships, ensuring that women are empowered as leaders, researchers, and decision-makers in shaping Africa’s hydrological future,” said Prof Timothy Dube from the IWS.
Let us encourage rigorous interrogation of global progress: whose waters are secure, and whose futures remain at risk? UWC remains unyielding in its dedication to ensuring that this vital flow is protected and shared equitably. Water is the pulse of our institution—let us manage it so that equality may grow for everyone, everywhere.
In practical terms, each of us can play a part: fix or report leaking taps and toilets immediately, take shorter showers, use water wisely in residences, laboratories and offices, avoid unnecessary wastage and be mindful of water use during events and campus activities.
Small, consistent actions across our community can collectively make a meaningful difference.
