The Department of Medical Biosciences is a part of the University's Faculty of Science, and teaches undergraduate degree programmes in Biomedical Sciences. Research projects are also undertaken in the same disciplines. The laboratory research interests in the Department include:Reproduction, Molecular Microbiology,Virology, Medical Microbiology,Oncology, Nutrition, and Cardiovascular Physiology.

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position on a project ‘Investigation of the effect of various indigenous medicinal plants on male reproductive health’. We recently chemically identified the bioactive compounds in South African medicinal plants that stimulate testosterone secretion and have also anti-prostate cancer activities. In addition, there are indications that plant extracts have male contraceptive effects. The project will be performed in collaboration between the laboratories of Prof Ralf Henkel and Prof David Fisher in the Department of Medical Bioscience.

This is a fixed term post for a period of 24 months.

The research is funded by the National Research Foundation and the University of the Western Cape.

To be successful in this role you will:

Have a PhD degree in Biomedical Science, preferably in reproductive biology. Experience in Cell Biology and HPLC. Experience of summarising, presenting results and writing up of publications.
