UWC's Cape Flats Nature Reserve is planning a controlled burn for April (date to be confirmed due to weather dependency).
The actual burn will only be for one day, with a monitoring team for any flare-ups in the days that follow. The Cape Peninsula Fire Protection Association (CPFPA) will be conducting the burn on our behalf.
Only a small section of the reserve will be burnt. This section has not burnt in nearly 40 years and bush encroachment slowly happened over the years. It now unfortunately poses a safety risk to life and infrastructure of UWC and the surrounding community should a wildfire occur. A controlled burn will minimize future wildfire risks.
