Dear Campus Community

April marks a special time at UWC. It is our Autumn graduation season – one of the most meaningful moments in the academic calendar. It is a time when we celebrate students who have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone, often in the face of significant challenges. Their achievements deserve recognition and admiration.

Graduation is also a moment to look ahead. The world our graduates enter is complex, uncertain, and demanding. Our country needs individuals who can think critically, act responsibly, and apply their knowledge in service of society. As you receive your qualifications, remember that your education is not only for personal advancement, but for the greater good.

UWC was founded in a time of division and inequality. Over more than six decades, we have demonstrated that inclusion and excellence are not opposing forces – they are mutually reinforcing. Today, UWC is ranked 7th in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a notable achievement. Yet what defines us most is not ranking, but purpose. Our graduates are not shaped by privilege, but by resilience and determination. Many have overcome financial hardship, family pressures, and systemic barriers. Their success affirms a simple truth: at UWC, inclusion produces excellence.

This year also reminds us that digital transformation is reshaping how we live and work. Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies offer immense potential, but they cannot replace human judgement, trust, or integrity. At UWC, we prepare our graduates not only to use these tools, but to question them – to consider who benefits, who is excluded, and what values guide their application. Our graduates leave equipped with both technical capability and ethical awareness, ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

Today, we celebrate every graduate, as well as the families, friends, and staff who supported them along the way. As you move forward, have confidence in your abilities, remain grounded in humility, and commit to lifelong learning. Be adaptable, be courageous, and above all, use your knowledge in ways that uplift others.

Excellence is not diminished by inclusion. At UWC, it is produced by it. The evidence is clear – it is present in every graduate who walks across this stage.
