On 23 June 2022 the UWC Council mandated Management to replace the Interim COVID-19 Vaccination Policy with a Workplace Plan. The fundamental change from the Policy is that save for faculties where a Hard Mandate was approved, stakeholders will no longer be required to be vaccinated to enter campus or be required to wear masks.
The health and safety of all University stakeholders on Campus is of the utmost importance to the University. Stakeholder engagement continues and students and staff are invited to comment on the Draft Return to Campus Risk Plan which can be viewed by clicking the button below. All comments must be submitted to the Registrar by 12h00 on Friday, 22 July 2022.

Some of the principles set out in the Return to Campus Risk Plan are:
- Access to the majority of faculties and campus in general will no longer be dependent on proof of vaccinations or negative PCR tests.
- Individuals must take responsibility for their own health and safety.
- Voluntary vaccinations, reasonable physical distancing, voluntary wearing of face masks and sanitising of hands is encouraged.
- Students and staff in the Dentistry, CHS and the Science (School of Pharmacy in particular)
- Faculties remain subject to a Hard Mandate at present and stakeholders must be vaccinated to enter the relevant faculty buildings and to treat patients.
- Save for the faculties referred to above, students will generally be allowed to register irrespective of being vaccinated or not.
- Campus safety and hygiene measures will be implemented to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
- Individuals who are COVID-19 positive may only return to campus after isolating for one week.
- It is envisaged that the principles set out in the Return to Campus Risk Plan will commence on 25 July 2022, however, it must be noted that all Faculties will formulate and present their phased-in plans in August 2022.
- The faculty or department’s phased-in return plans must be submitted to the Senate via the Senate Executive Committee (SEC) and the Senate Academic Planning Committee. The SEC may, on behalf of the Senate, reject, amend or approve such a plan. Once the phased-in return plans have been approved, the Deans will communicate the relevant plans to staff and students.
- The phased-in return plans shall form part of the University’s Flexible Learning and Teaching Provisioning Policy (FLTP) and the flexible modes and approaches set out in the FLTP will be implemented.
- Staff will return to campus based on operational requirements as communicated by their line managers.
- Faculties with hard mandates may apply for the cancellation of their hard mandates in their phased-in return plans.
