I wish to take this opportunity to inform you that Prof Julie Phillips has been appointed as Acting Director of the Research Development Office with effect from January to June 2022.
Prof Phillips is currently a full professor in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape, and the research coordinator of the Physiotherapy Department. Prof Phillips’ research interest focuses primarily on health systems related to persons with spinal cord injuries, focusing on the epidemiology and functioning of this cohort. She received a C-2 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) as an established researcher.
She has served on faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committees and Senate Higher Degrees for several years. Prof Phillips has been the principal investigator on projects funded by the NRF and worked closely with researchers from Karolinska Insitutet, Uppsala University and Mälardalen University in Sweden.
Prof Phillips has supervised 39 Masters and 12 doctoral students to completion at the University of the Western Cape, and one each at Karolinska Insitutet, Sweden and KU Leuven, Belgium.
I ask that we all support Prof Phillips in her acting role and provide her with the cooperation she requires to run the department and provide our researchers with the relevant support.
The announcement of a new director following the resignation of Prof Fielding as he takes up his new position as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences will be made in due course.
