When the clock strikes noon on Friday, 8 May 2026, something quietly historic will take place at the University of the Western Cape: (UWC) — Sport Administration will finally have a digital home to call its own. The launch of the department’s dedicated website marks the end of a long journey and, perhaps more importantly, the beginning of a much more connected era for sport at UWC.

The department oversees a sprawling portfolio including competitive sport development, campus recreation, student sport governance systems, inter-institutional collaborations and a vibrant network of student sport clubs. All of this has been driven by a team deeply committed to holistic student development — the idea that growth happens as much off the pitch as it does on it.

Yet for all that energy and activity, the department has long lacked a single, authoritative digital platform where students, staff, and partners can find everything in one place — fixtures, facilities, club information, events and UWC Sport news. 

For Elmien Cloete, the Director of Sport at UWC, the project is both a professional achievement and a personal milestone. Cloete, a UWC alumna who earned her Master’s Degree in Sport and Recreation (Cum Laude) from the institution in 2022, views the site as an essential tool for institutional growth.

“This website is not just a digital platform - it is a front door,” Cloete stated. “For years, we have been doing incredible work on this campus, building clubs, developing athletes and creating opportunities, but we haven’t always had the tools to show the world what UWC Sport truly represents. Now we do. I want every student who walks through our gates — or visits us online — to immediately feel the energy, the ambition and the inclusivity that defines us.”

The technical and creative execution of the site has been spearheaded by the UWC Sport Brand and Projects Coordinator, Skhu Rashid Nkomphela, and his team. The challenge was to translate the high-energy environment of UWC’s "Blue and Gold" spirit into a functional web format.

According to Nkomphela, the project required a balance of speed and precision. 

“Building a website that truly reflects who we are — the energy of our athletes, the dedication of our staff and coaches, the diversity of our UWC community — was not something we wanted to rush. We wanted to get it right. Every section, every image, every word had to feel like UWC Sport,” he explained.

The timing of the launch is particularly relevant given the department’s existing digital footprint. Under the banner #WeAreCaracals, UWC Sport has built a formidable social media presence, boasting over 36,000 followers on its social media platforms. The new website is intended to serve as the anchor for these social channels.

“Our social media has always been strong because the people behind it have incredible stories to tell,” Nkomphela added. “But a website is different. It’s permanent, it’s structured, and it’s where people go when they want to commit — when they want to sign up, find a club, or understand what UWC Sport stands for.”

Timed deliberately ahead of the UWC Open Day on 9 May, the website launch is more than a technical milestone — it is a statement of intent. Prospective students arriving on campus this weekend will find a department that is not only active on the field, but also organised, accessible and ready to welcome them online. For many of them, sport is a central part of their life. Now, for the first time, UWC Sport Administration can hand these visitors something tangible to take home — a web address, a community, a promise.

The new website is expected to serve as a gateway for every aspect of the UWC sporting experience: from the modern gymnasium facilities to competitive club sport, and from the department’s ethics code and fair-play principles to its deep collaborations with provincial and national sport organisations. The platform will reflect everything UWC Sport stands for — transparency, professionalism, respect and the holistic development of students and staff alike.

Friday at noon, the whistle blows. The long wait is nearly over.
