The Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Department of International Relations of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have come together to host the launch of the Falling Walls Engage 9th Hub on 28 and 29 November at its main campus in Bellville.

“We are proud at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) to come together to connect exciting South African and international perspectives on science engagement and planetary health,” said Prof Jaqui Goldin.

Goldin is an extraordinary associate professor of Anthropology and Water Sciences, Centre of Unesco Chair in Ground Water at the University of the Western Cape.

“We can’t have a healthy planet without healthy people, and for this, we need science to come out from the library, out from the laboratory and into real life. This is what we, as science engagers at UWC, are passionate about and dedicated to.”

Goldin said the event at the School of Government will focus on the four elements: fire, water, air and earth, and bring the very best practices in science engagement onto a unique platform.

Passionate science engagers will talk about alternative energy, agrarian justice, friendly and not-so-friendly fire, a water story museum and the songs of the humpback whales.

“We dive into astrophysics, bringing passionate young scientists together to reach for the moon and the stars. We showcase the nourishing power of our planet earth and how humans seek health through plants and products, and so much more,” says Goldin.

“This is the beginning of our journey with Falling Walls to make sure that we promote science engagers for the benefit of our country, our region and the African continent, leading up to the International Year of Science Engagement 2027 with UWC as one of the proud partners, promoting science across the globe.”

Goldin said the Falling Walls Foundation, located in Berlin, Germany, is a unique international platform for leaders from the worlds of science, business, politics, the arts and society. As one of the foundation’s programmes, Falling Walls Engage is the global platform for Science Engagement, co-hosted by Robert Bosch Stiftung.

The mission of Falling Walls Engage is to connect and support established and emerging science engagement stakeholders to generate mutual benefits for science and communities all around the world.

Goldin said UWC is an incubator of science engagement and, with its history as a promoter of social justice, stands proudly side-by-side with hubs in Japan, Mexico, Canada, Australia – all with a common vision of planetary health for 2022.

“The event will see a delegation of dedicated science engagers sharing a common passion of taking science out of the library and out of the laboratory and into communities who not only benefit from the science, but inform the future paths for the trajectory of science in the service of and for people,” said Goldin.
