African Society for Business, Law & Economics 2nd Annual Internation Conference on Business, Law & Economics
Date: 4 - 6 September 2024The Mercantile and Labour Law Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) is hosting the 2nd Annual African Conference on Business, Law and Economics (ACBLE) in conjunction with the Mercantile Law Department at the University of the Free State (UFS) and Mercantile Law Department at the University of the Witwatersrand. The conference will be held in Cape Town South Africa and will be hybrid (physical and virtual attendance).
This is the second revolving Conference to be hosted under the activities of the African Society for Business, Law and Economics. The society was founded in January 2023 as an initiative to create a platform where researchers, practitioners and students in law focussing on aspects of business and the economy can frequently converge to discuss topical areas of interest. The particular interest of the Society is around the economic analysis of the law. This field has been around since the 1800s and concentrates on the prediction of behaviour in response to legal rules. Thereafter, questions are then posed as to whether the effects of the legal rules are socially desirable. The annual conference seeks to develop research and scholarship within the field of law and economics in South Africa and beyond.
The theme for this year’s conference is: An integrated and prosperous Africa: The role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in realising Agenda 2063 (The Africa we want). Agenda 2063 is Africa’s blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse of the future. It is the continent’s strategic framework that aims to deliver on its goal for inclusive and sustainable development and is a concrete manifestation of the pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity pursued under Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance.
The AU’s Agenda 2063 is intricately interwoven with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include among other things, poverty reduction, quality education, gender equality, clean energy, decent work, economic growth and sustainable cities and communities. Given the AfCFTA’s aspirations, of trade liberalisation, creation of a common African market, promotion of free movement of people, gender equality and economic growth and prosperity, it is evident that a strong nexus between the successful implementation of the AfCFTA and the attainment of Agenda 2063 and the UN SDGs exists.
Against this backdrop, the 2nd ACBLE seeks to provide a platform for the in-depth analysis of the link between the AfCFTA, the UN SDGs and the AU’s Agenda 2063.
