Ben Turok Memorial Lecture
The Institute for African Alternatives invites you to the Ben Turok Memorial Lecture 2022.

Keynote speaker Yanis Varoufakis (pictured), renowned radical economist and former Greek Finance Minister, will speak - virtually - on Africa in the Face of the New Cold War and the West’s New Colonial Escapade.

Background

The annual Ben Turok Memorial Lecture marks the anniversary of the death of IFAA’s founder and former director, the struggle stalwart, Prof Ben Turok, who passed away on 9 December 2019. This is a tribute to an unrelenting critic of abuse of power and all forms of injustice and discrimination; it is also aimed at keeping alive Prof Turok’s political legacy based on economic justice, socio-economic rights, redistribution and political transformation.

Context

The Ben Turok Memorial Lecture comes at a time of crisis in our country and globally. The world faces economic meltdown since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which was unleashed before a start could be made on post-Covid recovery; the rise of right wing movements and populism; mounting poverty and food insecurity intensified by global warming; political instability and moral collapse, especially in the world’s so-called super-powers.

At this time we remember Prof Turok and his legacy; his voice is needed now more than ever.

About the exhibition

“Friendly Propaganda” is a collaborative concept developed by Johannesburg art collective Friendly SA and Cape Town’s Common Propaganda. The artists aim to reclaim the ‘power’ of propaganda to spread messages of solidarity through friendly but provocative art. The concept's next iteration is a poster exhibition featuring the Progressive International’s (PI) Art of Internationalism project - a platform for progressive artists around the world to explore the role of art and culture in imagining and shaping 21st century internationalism. The exhibition opens as a complement to this year's Ben Turok Memorial Lecture, delivered by PI council member, Yanis Varoufakis.

The Ben Turok Memorial Lecture is being held in collaboration with the University of the Western Cape’s Institute for Social Development, Progressive International, Common Propaganda and Surplus Radical Books.

IFAA thanks Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung for making this event possible.
