CodeJam Exhibition: Apps That Matter
CodeJam 2013 is coming to a close. That means it's time for a group of talented young entrepreneurs to deliver some amazing apps, and to give UWC students and staff a first look at what the future may hold in store. From 13h00 to 14h30 on Friday October 11, 18 teams of CodeJammers will be exhibiting their apps (iOS, Android and other) via laptops, tablets and cell phones.
CodeJammers have spent months training, learning, coding and developing, and refining their potentially world-changing apps, and on 11 October they'll be exhibiting the results of their labour: Apps That Matter. These are apps that provide support for start-up businesses, employment seekers and mathematics and science learners. The apps also improve access to public services for communities, and access to integrated information on transport systems.
Mobile applications have transformed our lives – billions of apps running on millions of phones, educate, entertain and aid us every day. However, there are many times when we find ourselves wishing in vain for the perfect app for our situation – an app that can reliably inform us when the train is running on time, help with our maths homework, or make setting up a new business a bit easier.
Well, the CodeJam app exhibition may have just what we're looking for.
The exhibit will take place at stalls in the foyer of the EMS Building. The teams will be able to explain how the apps work and how they can change the world, and they’ll be available to answer any app-related questions you may have.
The day will end with a gala dinner and prize-giving, where the creators of the most exciting ideas and apps will be rewarded with mobile devices (Apple and Android), sponsored trips to visit Durban and Johannesburg-based businesses, internships at various businesses, and having their apps placed into incubation. Everyone's a winner though, with their creations gaining public visibility and recognition, and having the potential to take South Africa by storm.

CodeJam 2013 was all about developing young, local app talent, and a local app ecosystem that addresses South Africa's socio-economic challenges and needs. CodeJam was presented by Western Cape CoLab, a joint undertaking between UWC and the national eSkills Institute (recently amalgamated with the National Media Institute of South Africa).
