The Directorate of Teaching and Learning and the Faculty of Arts Seminar series 2015: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Socially Just Pedagogies
Invite you to a seminar by Veronica Mitchell
Using drawings to open up our teaching & research
This seminar will describe an authentic teaching initiative with medical undergraduate students at the University of Cape Town which has led to my present doctoral research project. In developing a socially just pedagogy my focus has been on reflection, articulation and collaboration between the students who are in their 4th year, immersed in their practical Obstetrics rotation. In this seminar I will discuss how and why this project was initiated and the process that has been followed to move from silence to dialogue around the injustices that students observe in some birthing facilities. I will focus on how drawings can illuminate unexplored insights. Karen Barad’s sociomaterialism theory, and Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy of the rhizome inform my study.Veronica Mitchell has a background in Physiotherapy and a special interest in human rights education. She is a part-time facilitator in the Health Sciences Faculty at UCT where she also promotes Open Educational Resources to enable the global sharing of knowledge for free. She is currently working on a PhD under the supervision of Dr Michael Rowe and Prof Vivienne Bozalek at UWC. Design has been a hidden interest for a long time.
