BACK IN GENADENDAL DELIVERING “HEALTH & WELLNESS SCREENINGS”
Service that will be offered, see above poster
On 13-14 October 2022, the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences (CHS) students in collaboration with students from Faculty of Natural Science and Faculty of Law will once again venture into Genadendal community delivering “health and wellness promotion” as well as much needed service to the community after a 3-year long hiatus due to Covid-19 outbreak and restrictions that followed. This forms part of the faculty’s community development and engagement initiatives which involves engaging communities, building trust, do a needs analysis and deliver health, wellness and wellbeing promotion plus any other additional services.
The outreach pioneered by lnterproffesional Education Unit (IPEU) under the leadership of Acting Deputy Dean for Clinical and Community Engagement Prof Firdouza Waggie within the faculty in partnership with Western Cape Department of Health. UWC is a community engaged university and therefore furthering its wings and footprint to the surrounding areas forms part of UWC Operational.
“This engagement comes out of having identified that access to basic services and health is the biggest challenge for these communities” said Prof Waggie.
The faculty has shown in the past five years it is committed to go an extra mile in ensuring the communities including Genadendal, no matter how deep in the rural areas can get the wellness and health support they deserve, this drive and commitment will continue growing with strides each year and adding more services beneficial to the community. However, Covid-19 outbreak happened and restrictions coupled with protocols hampered any form of outreach for the faculty. In 2022 faculty has been steadfast holding various outreach programmes in various areas such as Bellville, Mitchelsplain, Fisantekraal, Klipheuwel and other communities and now back to Genadendal.
The faculty values the collaboration and partnership with internal and external partners including The Western Cape Department of Health , Tygerberg Hospice , Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and for further community engagement initiatives.
