Background

The need for critical engagement has become more pressing as our continent continues to face its historical legacies while contending with contemporary socio-economic challenges. This event will be the first of an annual lecture series with the purpose of fostering critical dialogue on African integration and related matters.

The lecture is part of the Keith Gottschalk Award for African Integration, created by the Mauerberger Foundation Fund (MFF) to honour the contribution of Mr Keith Gottschalk to South African politics and political studies as a discipline. The award aligns with and supports the broader faculty and university mission by contributing to critical, engaged and applied scholarship. The lecture will form part of the university’s Africa Day celebrations.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Khabele Matlosa. Dr Matlosa is the former Director, Department of Political Affairs, African Union Commission, ADDIS Ababa, Ethiopia. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the African Centre for Diplomacy and Leadership, University of Johannesburg.
