The Centre for African Language Teaching (CALT) is an innovative project with a strong emphasis on the teaching and learning of isiXhosa literacy in Teacher Education in the Foundation Phase. CALT is a collaborative initiative that has forged strong working relationships with its partner universities the University of Fort Hare, Rhodes University and Walter Sisulu University which also offer isiXhosa literacy in their BEd Foundation Phase programs.
The key components of the CALT project include the professional development of isiXhosa literacy teacher educators, materials development in isiXhosa, and research and scholarship into African language teaching and learning.
Towards this aim, CALT with the Faculty of Education is hosting a 2-day workshop as part of its literacy materials development focus. Experienced isiXhosa lecturers will be reading the content page for materials (units) produced by Foundation Phase teacher educators for teaching isiXhosa literacy in the Foundation Phase.
