Miners Shot Down: Marikana Movie Screening at UWC
UWC’s Department of Political Studies invites one and all to a FREE film screening of Miners Shot Down, a compelling and award-winning documentary that takes a hard look at the Marikana mining strike.
Three years ago, 44 people were killed, and dozens more were injured, in the single most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since the end of the Apartheid era: the Marikana Massacre. Why did it happen? How did a simple wage dispute turn so ugly? And what does all this tell us about politics and society and economy and power and brutality in the new South Africa?
Come find out for yourself on Friday 14 August – and feel free to stay for the panel discussion immediately after the screening, where academics and filmmakers will be discussing how the film reflects current labour, social and economic issues in South Africa.
