Dr. Kerstin Brandes has taught art and media studies at universities and art schools in Hamburg, Oldenburg, Bremen, Paderborn und Vienna and was visiting professor at Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2009, she has been a lecturer at the Institute of Art and Visual Culture, University of Oldenburg. She is also co-editor of the journal FKW // Zeitschrift für Geschlechterforschung und visuelle Kultur. Her research and publications deal with cultural gender studies, postcolonial and queer studies; the relationship between image circulations, media histories, and transculturality; photography and questions of identity; visual culture and the politics of representation. Her current project focuses on the figure of the “Hottentot Venus”.
