The focus of the Horizon Europe RE-WIRING project (2023-2026) is on the fundamental re-thinking and 're-wiring' of existing institutional approaches and systems towards transformative equality, therewith shifting the focus from an individual human rights approach to securing gender equality to a collective public and private responsibility.

In her talk Prof Senden will address the extent to which all Institutions are gendered, including also law- and policymaking bodies, processes and their outcomes. How can law- and policymaking be made more gender -responsive in such a way that it effectively contributes to combating root causes of structural discrimination, meaning the eradication of underlying gender stereotyping and biases? In the RE-WIRING project (https://re-wiring.eu/) we aim at developing both theoretical and practical approaches for the ‘re-wiring’ of institutions to such a transformative equality approach.
 

Short biography

Since 2011 Prof Senden holds the chair in European law at Utrecht University. From 2012 until 2020, she was co-director of the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (https://www.uu.nl/en/research/utrecht-centre-for-regulation-and-enforcement-in-europe). She has been co-founder and is co-director of the interdisciplinary Utrecht University Gender, Diversity and Global Justice Platform (https://www.uu.nl/en/research/institutions-for-open-societies/gender-and-diversity) since 2018. Since 2019 she is specialist coordinator of the gender stream of the European Equality Law Network (https://www.equalitylaw.eu/). Since March 1, 2023 she is also heading the interdisciplinary and international ‘RE-WIRING’ Horizon Europe project on Realising Women’s Inclusion, Representation and Empowerment (https://re-wiring.eu/). She has published widely on different issues regarding gender equality, including on equal pay, positive action, gender-balanced company boards, equal access to goods and services, algorithmic discrimination and enforcement.
