World Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
The University of the Western Cape is honoured to host this year’s 6th World Conference on Remedies to Racial and Social Inequality.
The Sixth World Conference on Remedies to Racial and Social Inequality will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on September 3-5, 2024 at the University of the Western Cape, Bellville Campus. This conference will be held in person with options for virtual participation.
Building on the previous five conferences, the Sixth World Conference will convene academic, policy, and community leaders from South Africa, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe to share research, ideas, remedies and practical solutions to the complex and deeply rooted issue of systemic inequality. The conference will tackle topics across various domains including policy, education, economics, and social systems.
The conference is jointly presented by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of the Western Cape (EMS) and the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice at the University of Minnesota (RWC) and the Sixth World Conference on Racial and Social Inequality International Advisory Board. The event will bring together researchers, policy analysts, professionals and practitioners from around the world to share existing solutions and to innovate new solutions.
With a legacy of public policy remedies implemented and developed through rigorous analytical research and publication, the Conference will encompass a range of topics including inequalities in economic opportunity, inequality regimes and rules of accumulation, political access, access to education, water, health care and food security, the cost of climate mitigation, intergenerational poverty, unemployment, and gender based violence.
The Conference will serve as a global forum for change and will invite public and private sector thought leaders to participate and co-develop pathways for practical collaboration and applied research.
Some estimates put South Africa among the most acutely unequal countries in the world. Extreme uneven development is economic violence produced when structural and systemic policy choices are made for the richest, and the most vulnerable are systemically disempowered.
Issues to be tackled:
- Impact of the climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic on economic, educational, medical and social disparities facing racial/ethnic minorities and people of colour
- Changing nature of wealth, structural poverty and employment
- Inequality regimes and the state
- Social Inequality and the Sustainable Development Goals
- Access to health care, education and personal security
- Intergenerational poverty and unemployment
- Gender inequality and Gender-based violence
- Spatial inequality and uneven mobilities
- Energy, the environment, and climate change
- Food and water insecurity
- Housing and spatial exclusion
- Digital oppression, the role of technology and access to media
- Democracy, power and racism
Convening distinguished academics, researchers, policymakers, business leaders, non-profit and NGO leaders, community leaders and activists, and artists from the U.S., Brazil (The 5th World Conference), Australia and other countries, the Conference will consist of keynote addresses, panel discussions and workshops. Participants will craft innovative policy solutions for local, national, and global action. To accommodate global participation, the Conference will be delivered in a hybrid format.

As presenters have begun to make their plans for the conference, they have posed a number of questions about travel and their presentations that we want to answer for all presenters.
1. Have the hotel blocks/rates been identified? We need to know the costs of lodging to plan/budget, and also secure external funding.
We have identified three hotels for the conference: Hotel Verde, Protea Hotel Durbanville, and Westin Cape Town. We are working with our partners in South Africa to secure a conference rate for at least one hotel and will let you know as soon as it is available.
The current pre-discount rates at these three official conference hotels are:
A. Hotel Verde, a sustainable hotel about 15 minutes by car to campus and adjacent to the airport: $151.07 for a one night stay, and $604.26 for a four night stay*
B. Protea Hotel Durbanville (Marriott Chain), north of the city and campus, is about 20 minutes from campus by car: $72.97 for a one night stay, and $291.86 for a four night stay.
C. Westin Cape Town, on the waterfront and adjacent to the Cape Town International Convention Center, about 25 minutes from campus: $451.30 for a one night stay, and $1713.34 for a four night stay.
Shuttle Buses between the Westin and UWC campus will be provided.
Note: Attendees who decide to stay at a beachfront hotel can take an Uber to the Convention Center and take the conference shuttle to campus.
Shuttle buses will be available between each hotel and campus.
* These rates are from each hotel's website on May 3, 2024 and are subject to change. They reflect a one night stay on September 2 and a four-night stay from September 2 to September 6. The exchange rate used is $1 US = 18.51 South African Rand. Different hotel rates may be available from sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, or Booking.com.
2. To help with air travel reservations, when will the conference begin on September 3 and conclude on September 5
The conference will open on the morning of September 3 at 9:00 am. Formal panels and sessions end each day by 6:15 pm.
3. Exactly what do the panel and paper presenters need to submit by July 15? Is it a formal article/paper required for the panel, or are you just expecting outline, PPT slides, handouts, etc.?
Formal papers are not required. We understand that while many of our presenters will be discussing their recent research and will have papers, others, particularly those from the nonprofit sector, will be using PowerPoint slides, handouts, or similar materials to discuss their work. Please submit whatever materials you will be using or discussing during your presentation.
We are requesting these materials in advance of the conference so that we
A. Have a complete set of conference materials, to back up our presenters in case of an unexpected event
B. Can develop an understanding of all the work to be discussed as well consider publishing opportunities for the conference
4. Are the panels required to identify and bring in their own moderator? Will the conference organizers help with identifying moderators?
A. For those panel presenters who have already identified a moderator, move forward with that person. Please send us that person's name, title, and email, if you did not previously include them in your proposal.
B. If you submitted a panel but did not include a moderator in your proposal and do not have a moderator in mind, please let us know so we can work with you to identify a moderator.
C. For those presenters who submitted a paper or similar proposal, we will be developing your panel of speakers as well as the moderator. Over the summer, we will inform you about your fellow presenters and moderator.
5. What format should we prepare for (such as how much time will we have to present)?
Some panels will reflect academic discussions similar to those that occur frequently at conferences, while others will be more reflective of a workshop, open dialogue, or other format. Therefore, there are three types of sessions at the conference:
A. Plenary Sessions (60 minutes) seating 175 to 380 participants in theater-style lecture halls.
B. Concurrent sessions, organized in a more intimate setting with extensive audio-visual equipment suited for hybrid panels, are classroom layout. Concurrent panels – organized according to the themes of the conference -- will be 75 minutes long.
If you submitted a panel, design your session to reflect your preferred program design and plans for your session.
C. Workshops and training sessions will vary in length and setup of tables/chairs. Workshop leaders should contact us at lpenxa@uwc.ac.za immediately to indicate their layout and timing preferences.
6. We would like to project PowerPoint slides during our session. Will our presentation room have a screen and projector?
Yes, the buildings at the University of the Western Cape are very well-equipped electronically, with most rooms fully set up to accommodate audio and video needs.
7. Conference costs are steep. Are there any discounts for presenters and students, or other financial support?
We are very aware and sensitive of the cost to travel to South Africa, and appreciate your willingness to make the trip.
We have set a student rate for registration, and we offered an early registration rate for other participants.
One option is to secure an Academic Sponsorship from your institution. Academic Sponsorships cost $2500 and provide up to 8 complimentary registrations and tickets to the optional pre-conference reception and closing gala.
