The Jaap Durand Chair and the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science at the University of the Western Cape will be hosting the seminar. It proceeds from the premise that sport plays a significant role in the formation of national identity, and that the broader project of transformation in South African sport remains incomplete, particularly in light of the persistent gap between elite performance sport and under-resourced community-level participation.

In keeping with the Jaap Durand Chair’s commitment to fostering a just, participatory and sustainable society, the seminar will engage the fragmented histories of South African sport, the impact of governance and policy frameworks, and the role of sport as a form of social intervention.

The seminar is open to the public. Seating, however, is limited.
