Prof Selaelo Thias Kgatla is an Extra-Ordinary Professor in the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape. The title of his lecture is “Reading Belhar Confession in a wounded world” which will address multi-layered and multi-dimensional challenges confronting a confessing church today including but not limited to inequality, corruption, greed, femicide and religious fundamentalism.
A holder of two doctoral degrees, Prof Kgatla taught Missiology and Religious Studies at the University of Limpopo for 20 years before joining the University of Pretoria as Associate Professor in Missiology and Religion. In 2016 he became a research fellow at the Research Institute of Theology and Religion at the University of South Africa. Prof Kgatla’s work involves promoting and conducting research in Church Witness in the World, Interfaith Dialogue, Religious Construct and Stereotyping in Society, the Role of Religion and Conflict. He has supervised more than 20 PhD and Masters students and has published widely in both local and international peer reviewed journals.
Prof Kgatla is a member of the national and international bodies including the Southern African Missiological Society (SAMS), South African Council of Churches (SACC), African Association for Study of Religion (AASR), International Association of Mission Studies, (IAMS) American Professors of Missiology (APM), and International Association for Study of Religion (IASR). In 2019-2023 he was awarded research rating of C2 by the National Research Foundation.
Prof Kgatla has previously served the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) as the General Synod Moderator and Regional Synod of the North for two and three terms respectively.
