The Employment Equity Amendment Act, 2022 was gazetted in April 2023 and will come into effect on 1 September 2023.  The proposed sector EE targets were published as part of the Draft Regulations for comment on the 12th of May.

Meko Magida
Meko Magida is an admitted attorney and Executive Director: Human Resources at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).  Meko was previously employed in the provincial office of the Department of Labour as Deputy Director and Head of Labour Relations before he took up the national position of Director of Equal Opportunities, where he was instrumental in setting up the Commission for Employment Equity. Meko facilitated the training of labour inspectors to equip them to monitor and enforce the Employment Equity (EE) Act and played a key role in managing and championing the promulgation and implementation of the EE Act, Act 55 of 1998.

Shamima Gaibie
Shamima Gaibie is Senior Director at Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc. Shamima is an experienced and highly regarded labour law practitioner, and is the author/co-author of numerous legal articles, including Affirmative Action – Concepts and Controversies (2014) and The Employment Equity Amendment Bill 2018: Grappling with an Evaluation of ‘Equity’ 20 Years Later (2020) published in the Industrial Law Journal.

Roger Ronnie
Roger Ronnie is a researcher and facilitator with the Social Law Project (SLP) in CENTROW. Roger has 23 years experience as a trade unionist in the local government sector, and played a central role in the formation of the South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC). Roger is active in labour law reform initiatives and was a member of the team that drafted a series of papers for the ILO’s Future of Work Initiative to facilitate debate amongst social partners in NEDLAC.

The Webinar will be facilitated by Paul Benjamin, Extraordinary Professor, Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape, and Director of Cheadle Thompson.
