Title decider for Udubs Ladies
UWC Ladies Football Club’s goal to defend their Sasol Western Cape League title will be tested – and probably be decided – this weekend when they take on arch rivals and fellow title contenders in Cape Town Roses Football Club.
The two sides, by far the best and most successful women football clubs in the Western Cape, will lock horns at UWC Sports Stadium at 3pm on Saturday 28 October 2017. Udubs wrestled the Sasol League, the premier women’s football league in South Africa, and brought it home for the first time last season after Roses had won it for six consecutive years prior. UWC have been on song this season, having not lost a games so far (they have won 25 matches and drew three others). They in the summit of the log standing with 78 points – two points clear of Roses who are breathing heavily on their shoulders with a two goal difference advantage, though. The third team on the log has no chance to catch the two teams as it is 14 points adrift of Roses on 62 points.
A win for Udubs will put the contest out of Roses reach and ensure that the trophy remains in the University cupboard while a draw will also put them in the driving seat. A lose will all but dash their chances and hand the advantage – and probably the title – to Roses. In addition to both teams challenging for the title, both sides boast a number of international players in their midst who have played for Banyana Banyana and other junior national teams. The University community and sport lovers are encouraged to come in their big numbers to support the women’s football at its best which promises to see sparks fly and could be the game of the season for the ladies.
