“Excellent” sports stars to be honoured
The Department of Sports Administration at the University of the Western (UWC) will honour outstanding athletes at its annual Sports Awards ceremony on Thursday, 10 October 2013.
The aim of the event is to recognise sports personalities who have excelled during 2013 in their respective codes in various categories. The categories include sportsman of the year, sportswomen of the year, top team of the year, academic achiever of the year and administrator of the year.
Among those in line to receive awards at the event are athletes who have earned the “Athlete of the Month” accolade during the year. They include Mthetheleli ‘Taz’ Fuzani, whose brilliant performance in this year’s Varsity Shield rugby tournament was rewarded with an invitation to the Western Province Currie Cup side, along with the Varsity Shield Player that Rocks recipient, Frederick Muller, who represented the University Sport South Africa rugby sevens team which participated in this year’s World Student Games in Kazan, Russia.
Other athletes who excelled this year are swimming sensation Robyn Ferguson, who shined at the Student World Games; the UWC Ladies Football Club trio of Jermaine Seoponsewe, Kaylin Swart and Vuyo Mkhabela, who represented the national senior women’s team, Banyana Banyana, in the 12 Nations CYPRUS Women’s Cup; and athlete Rodwell Ndlovu, who grabbed the spotlight in the inaugural Varsity Athletics competition.
The award ceremony kicks-off at 19h30 in the Main Hall.
