UWC ready to rock 2015 varsity Shield campaign
The University of the Western Cape’s Rugby Squad (FNB UWC) is ready for action this year in the Varsity Shield competition which kicks off on 2 February 2015.
UWC’s opening match is against the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal at the UWC Sports Stadium.
UWC Head Coach Peter De Villiers said that a change in the mental approach to the game is the beginning of new things this season, and this will be key to their success in 2015.
De Villiers said the team is well prepared for the upcoming season. He said the squad started their training camp in October 2014, and they are confident.
“Our squad is very different this year and we have a good balance of young and older players. The spirit is high and the fact that they believe in each other is our biggest asset.”
He said that 19 and 20 year olds make up the majority of the team and they will be the future of the squad for the next five years.
De Villiers said that they have already made a lot of changes. “Psychologically we have gotten them onto another level - which is the most important part.”
FNB UWC started their 2014 Varsity Shield campaign on a high note, with the side topping the log for the opening two weeks. Their good run did not last long, however, and they finished the competition second last.
De Villiers said that preparations are tough as players are still in the holiday mood. “We need to train hard in order for them to realise their potential and to be shown where they can be,” he said.
He urges the UWC community to come out in full force to support the boys.
