Background

Local government in South Africa is expected to contribute toward efforts to realise the constitutional vision of building national unity, diversity, belonging, social justice and a cohesive society. Municipalities as spheres of government closest to communities are expected to contribute towards this constitutional vision by facilitating among other things trust and sense of belonging as an aspect of social cohesion. 

However, there is insufficient evidence of what the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) documents of the City of Cape Town and City of Ekurhuleni’s articulation of social cohesion, trust and sense of belonging. Accordingly, this study examines the articulation of social cohesion, trust, and sense of belonging in the documents of the City of Cape Town and City of Ekurhuleni. The study utilised a qualitative document analysis method to explore what IDP documents articulate of social cohesion, trust and sense of belonging.

About the speaker

Fundiswa Khaile is a Lecturer and PhD candidate in the School of Government at the University of Western Cape. Her research focuses on strengthening social cohesion through government structures. She has published and presented her research both locally and internationally. She is a member of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM) and South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM).
