The experiences an infant undergoes during their First 1000 days of Life can greatly influence the development of the child. During this time period, it is critical that an infant receives adequate parenting, guidance and nurturing. The father has the role of support structure, and although underestimated, their involvement is just as important as the mothers. The Nurturing Care Framework served as the theoretical framework used to understand being a father during the First 1000 days of Life.
A qualitative methodological framework with an exploratory research design has been implemented. Fifteen participants have been purposefully selected within Cape Town and individual semi-structured interviews were incorporated as the data collection method. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed according to the six stages of thematic analysis created by Braun and Clark.
This analysis revealed 5 major themes within the data, namely;

Carushca de Beer obtained her Bachelors (2018) and Honours (2019) degree and is currently working towards completing her Master's degree in Research Psychology as well. She is motivated to create awareness regarding the importance of Early Childhood Development in South Africa, as well as to aid children in reaching their fullest potential for optimal development. Alongside her research supervisor and co-workers, she has assisted with various projects pertaining to the First 1000 Days of a child's life; and aspires to advance knowledge within this field of research.Abstract

- Fatherhood, explaining the father’s experience of fatherhood;
- Father to Father, which describes the value that participants saw in their own fathers/ father figures;
- Pregnancy, a team effort, that depicts the father’s role towards the mother through pregnancy and after the child’s birth;
- First 100 Days of Life, explaining the father’s experience of interacting with the baby;
- Bonding time, which explores the methods fathers used to form an attachment with the baby. The proposed research is intended to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on fatherhood emerging in South Africa.
