Edward Waisanen is Platform and Program Manager for the Gala sustainability learning initiative at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability where he is focused on developing open tools that support dynamic, collaborative, learning and curriculum development.
Ed manages several programs and partnerships, including the Midwest Big Data Innovation Hub Learning Innovation Fellows Program and the Data Learning for Better Drinking Water in Small Utilities project. He also oversees development of the Gala platform (learngala.com), mediating between web developers, faculty, and students.
With an emphasis on openness, experimentation, and collaboration, Gala has grown as both an academic initiative and a web platform; hosting experiments that span place-based learning, data-science and ecology, and workforce development - with programs that position students as both creators and consumers of curricular materials. Beyond serving as a repository for open access case studies, the initiative now strives to provide a toolbox of methods and a digital infrastructure for creating learning modules and adapting them for use in different contexts; in the classroom and beyond.
What opportunities and challenges do these approaches present and how can technology better facilitate learning across contexts?

Abstract
Founded with the mandate to create a library of media-rich teaching-cases for sustainability education, the Gala Sustainability Learning initiative (based out of the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability) created an online platform to share open access learning modules (learngala.com).With an emphasis on openness, experimentation, and collaboration, Gala has grown as both an academic initiative and a web platform; hosting experiments that span place-based learning, data-science and ecology, and workforce development - with programs that position students as both creators and consumers of curricular materials.
