The judiciary is an independent branch of government which among other things has the responsibility to maintain the rule of law, ensure justice, uphold rights, interpret and apply the law impartially. Like any branch of government, the judiciary is not immune from corruption. The existence of corruption in the judicial system even in minuscule degree undermines the credibility of the judiciary, weakens the administration of justice, undermines democratic principles and protection of human rights. The imperatives of judicial integrity and a judiciary that is above board cannot be overemphasised because the mere perception that there is corruption within the judiciary is enough to erode public trust and threaten the ideal of impartiality. This requires eternal vigilance on the part of the judiciary and all stakeholders to maintain the sanctity of the temple of justice as guardian of our constitutional democracy.

Join the African Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice (University of the Western Cape) and Corruption Watch, the Transparency International Chapter in South Africa in the exploration of the complex balance between combating corruption in the judiciary and upholding judicial independence in Sub-Saharan Africa. The panel will discuss some of the challenges of curbing corruption in the judiciary and respecting the independence of the judiciary. The panellists will explore best practices to combat corruption and the interventions needed to strengthen the independence of the judiciary. By bringing our experts, we invite you to the discussion to foster an understanding of how to achieve robust anti-corruption measures strengthening the judiciary in Sub-Saharan Africa.
