You are invited to attend a webinar entitled: The Russia-Ukraine conflict, nuclear risks and South Africa's position. The webinar will be hosted by the Pugwash South Africa branch in collaboration with the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.
The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs is an organisation that aims to bring scientific insight and reason to bear on the catastrophic threat posed to humanity by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. It has worked behind the scenes in several conflicts to bring fighting parties closer to peaceful resolution of their differences and to avoid nuclear war. In collaboration with the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Western Cape, the South African branch of Pugwash will host a webinar on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the nuclear risks involved and South Africa’s position. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has drawn condemnation from most corners of the world. Pugwash also released a statement on the conflict, including a possible way out of the situation, which Pugwash’s secretary general, Paolo Cotta Ramusino, will unpack.

On 28 March President Putin put Russia’s nuclear forces on a higher alert level, threatening third parties from joining the war on Ukraine’s side. Professor Tom Sauer from the University of Antwerp will highlight the risks of nuclear weapons use in this conflict. The conflict will have broader implications for world order and in particular the nuclear order. The Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), often referred to as the cornerstone of the nuclear order, is a Cold War era agreement among nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states to limit the spread of nuclear weapons and to further nuclear disarmament. Prof Joelien Pretorius of the University of the Western Cape will outline the implications of the conflict for the NPT.
South Africa has been criticised for not taking a stronger stance against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Prof Bheki Mngomezulu of the University of the Western Cape will contextualise the South African position and its possible consequences for the country. The webinar will be chaired by Prof Nola Dippenaar, head of Pugwash South Africa. Panellists will each speak for 10 minutes, followed by a Q&A session.
