The University of the Western Cape (UWC) launched a Women in Analytics event on 30 November 2019 in collaboration with SAS®. The purpose of the event is to introduce grade 11 learners and their Mathematics teachers to the exciting world of analytics.
The Statistics and Population Studies Department at UWC, has invited top performing mathematics grade 11 girls of a few selected schools to visit UWC for a High Tea function. Both international and national female analysts shared their career experiences and career paths to encourage young ladies to consider a career in analytics. This is one of the top scarce skill areas that could be considered as a very exciting career choice.
The schools that attended were: The Settlers High School, Spine Road High School, Rylands High School, South Peninsula High School, Wynberg Girls' High School, CAMST (Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology), COSAT (Centre of Science and Technology), Wittebome High School, Plumstead High School and Excelsior Secondary High School. We have invited either the Principal or the Head of Mathematics plus four grade 11 girls per school. These girls are the top performers in Mathematics at their school.
As part of the function we handed out a few lucky draw prizes and special gifts from our sponsors (Cathy Sims from the SAGEA network, TFG and SAS®). Tips to assist with the Matric exam, information about university applications and selections and much more was also shared. Teachers also received posters for their classroom. Each learner and teacher received a flash drive with information that could help them make informed decisions about their career choices.
Girls and teachers/principals had the opportunity to ask questions in an informal setting about what a career in analytics in a round table setting during the High Tea function.
