Women Matters Hackathon

Hacking The Future: Women Matter(S) Hackathon At UWC

It’s easier than ever to change the world these days. All it takes is a good idea, some technical skills, and the right kind of support - and anybody can create a programme or an app that changes the world.

That’s why it’s such a shame that young women are often not exposed to careers in technology. That’s a problem for them (technology-related careers can be very rewarding, and two out of every three young African women are jobless!) and for everybody else (talent isn’t confined to one half of the population, and who knows what world-changing tech solutions we’re missing out on every time a potential coder misses their chance?).

That’s why UWC’s Department of Information Systems is hosting theWomen Matter(s) Hackathonthis weekend - a hackathon where young women can learn to code and come up with tech solutions for women-related challenges.

On Friday, 19 August 2016, the weekend will kick off with a technology-related careers exhibition where 100 young girls from Cape Town township high schools (including the IS Department’s Mozilla Club members) will spend the day on campus, learning about coding and robots, and getting to meet successful women working in the tech space.

And on Saturday, 20 and Sunday, 21 August 2016, the Women Matter(s) Hacklet* will give young women - high schoolers, university students, any young ladies at all who’re keen to learn - the chance to get some basic programming skills and work on their own projects to solve women-related problems with technology. Remember: Young girls can design educational, social or business solutions that can benefit women and the greater society when given the skills and a chance to do so...and become successful entrepreneurs to boot.

All young women are welcome- and to the best project will go the prize…
