The World Leisure Youth Ambassadors will celebrate World Leisure Day on Thursday, 14 April 2022.
The event will take place online so that young people and their supervisors could present their institutions and activities throughout the day. Mr Makhaya Malema, Lecturer for Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science will be presenting his programme for the persons with disabilities in Khayelitsha. Furthermore, students from SRES will be presenting other activities such as hiking or even performing a song or a dance. The event is open for young people across the globe to log in and experience what young people are doing in the name of leisure across the world.
“Leisure and recreation matter as it is integral to the social, cultural, economic, and sustainable environmental development and the well-being of individuals, communities and nations. The Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science educates students in the field of community recreation programming and therapeutic recreation for ALL, with the focus to promote physical and mental well-being, quality of life and social engagement that is positive and developmental in nature,” said Dr Marie Young, moderator from SRES department and a World Leisure Organization (WLO) board member.
The World Leisure Day (WL Day) is a global initiative from WLO which aims to reinforce leisure as a social right and its importance in daily life, as well as to expand and promote leisure globally while recognising that barriers still exist for many worldwide. Leisure plays an important part in human development, personal growth, and the promotion of health and well-being for individuals in different socio-cultural contexts.
